Reading BMO is Easy

"I’m approaching fifty and my ass has never seen the light of day." --BMO

better still:

"It's turtles all the way down."

you could write a book off that guy BMO.

And don't forget to read about his very good day too.

when success at blogging means you have no time to blog...

you really have to sit down and think about stuff. or recline. either way. just don't fall asleep. because that won't solve anything. unless it's the middle of the night. in which case it's helpful.

Booking Band for International Hotels and Resorts - Music by Montage

An interruption in our regular programming....

Music by Montage is a working band bringing first-class musical entertainment to upscale venues in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Working with artist management and booking agencies as well as Food and Beverage (F&B) Directors at major hotels and resorts -- including Gary's Motown Club in Nagoya, Japan; Club Narcissus in Bangkok, Thailand; The Grand Hyatt's JJ's Club in Hong Kong, and Club Quattro in Osaka, Japan -- Montage works with the finest hotel nightclub operations throughout the world.

Clients rave about the professionalism of the band's members, who are among the highest quality entertainers in the business. They are regularly booked for three to six month engagements at five-star resorts and hotels.

Now, I don't have a lot of expertise in artist management and production, but I have a husband of 20 years with a professional, road-ready, working band, passports in hand, and some great musicians (in Montage and in other acts George works with). I also have a network of blogger colleagues and friends globally. A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN. If any of you are connected to the F&B folks at major hotels and resorts, or if you have friends who book acts for international corporate and hotel/resort engagements, you KNOW where to find us and where to send them for videos, songlist, bios, and more.

AND: I'm now taking bids from my web design friends on making the rather amateurish Montage website I tried my best with into something a little more presentable. Of course, links/credit/love given on our sites plus a taste of $ is the preferred currency. I know there are typos. George is proofing it tomorrow.

THANK YOU GLOBAL FRIENDS.

Now, Back to your regularly scheduled programming....

Paul Kedrosky On MS Jive Writer

Paul Kedrosky says Live Writer feels like a blog tool designed by non-bloggers for non-bloggers. Here are some problems he encountered:

  1. On setup it refused to auto-recognize my blog at its actual address. And the typically over-controlling Microsoft software wouldn't give me a manual config mode screen to set the blog up directly, simply blowing up with an error instead. I had to trick it into giving me a manual config screen by giving it the incorrect URL for my blog. Go figure.

  2. The "Web" layout in the app is nonsensical. Because I have a three column CSS layout Microsoft Live Writer faithfully mimics that on screen. Except there is a problem: On the blog those two other (outer) columns have content. On the editor screen they're empty, like giant white margins that should be able to get rid of, but can't. Go back to normal view, however, and it screws up the HTML formatting, like block quotes. Great.

  3. It doesn't auto-load your most recently posted stories. Instead, it forces you to go find some stories and load them in yourself. That's dumb.

school starts tomorrow

as you can see, i haven't exactly turned my clock around yet. it's 1:39 and i'm wide awake. shit. i hate 6 a.m. waking. I have been on my 11-11+ schedule all summer and that's how i work best. Just let me sleep in. Then the game's on.

So this next week or two will be a challenge. I haven't needed to nap all summer. Now I remember how i got through last school year with the late evening work projects: i napped in the late a.m.

poop. no time to nap now. jenna couldn't sleep. she was too excited. 3rd grade here she comes. lookout, she turns 9 in sept.

well, let's make tonight count. it's the last day of summer in the south--or at least summer with the kids calling you every 2 minutes.

carpool dropoff in 6 hrs.

They call it 'writer' for short - windows live writer

<rant>

why does this read like ze frank talking about knowledge, but with the exact opposite level of coolness? Why do I feel like I'm being talked to as a three year old who can now press the 'enter' key on her own? Why do I think this is stupid?

Why are they saying "Blogging has turned the web into a two-way communications medium" and linking to something dave winer wrote SIX YEARS AGO? Blogging's BEEN a two-way communication medium from the get-go--fuck that, it's a MULTI-WAY MULTI-DIMENSIONAL communication medium. or it's not a communication medium at all, maybe it's the message, mofos. maybe blogging is 8 parts context, 2 parts content.

The last likeable thing about Microsoft was Scoble, and don't make me wander too far into that territory cause there are some weeds to be found.

Microsoft, what side of the bed did you wake up on today--stupid?

"Whether you are blogging about a vacation or a political conflict, maps are a great help in engaging the imagination of your readers."

Microsoft, who wrote that shit?

From what I've read here, I'm not moved to try "Writer" (hey kids, "Writer knows the styles of your blog...Writer also includes other views..." No motherfuckers, I AM THE WRITER. WE ARE THE WRITERS. You are Microsoft. Go make love to the enterprise. Leave the intuitive blog related tools to the folks who care about this space and go fix Vista--an OS I hope to never have to experience. And quit talking to me like I'm three.

Or maybe I'll try it tomorrow.

myspace question what's keeping me wanting

why can't i pay levi seacer right now to download Happy Love and take it with me in my car on a cd of favorite myspace music i like or on my mp3 player, because i have to leave the house right now, and the Internet should make it possible for me to NOT have to leave the song I'm listening to behind--and make sure Levi makes some bread too. Why does it have to be so much work. It shouldn't be. Distribution is flawed. Recommendation is flawed.

There is an entire Big Bang Idea waiting in human-assisted music recommendation and distribution. whatever. Tag it, flag it, pay for it, DO IT SOMEBODY.

I wanted to take Happy Love with me today. You might want to too. But we can't. And he doesn't need to let me take it for free. And I shouldn't have to go hunting around for it. Not w/ all the hooptie-doo of web 2.0 or do i have to wait for 3.0? goodness. pisses me off. i love myspace because of that. we're almost there. then it will populate 100000000 times over.

social network myspace--notes

myspace is lame, no it's not. rupert's in control, no he's not.

listen i stand by myspace. i like that it doesn't work so well. yet. I like that everytime i'm there i can think of 22 ways to make it better. I can think of 22 more on how to make $--business models blooming. why not let users feed what music is cool out from myspace via rss, why not mashup cdbaby or itunes-likeness, let me pay $2 a song to the artists I like, not who's popular--who's popular TO ME--and i'm the source to my friends. why isn't every one of us a distribution network for music. why don't we even get 25 cents a match--humans as intermediaries powered by tech, not technology as intermediary. a top-ten-sources way to distribute music...love me, love my music because i don't have much in common with 18 year old college freshmen but i have a lot in common with tom and frank and stowe and shelley and e. and mike and gary and chris and lisa and jory and denise and 1000 other friends and i want to see their music distribution feeds off myspace, new music not the same old lame old, and i want to pay the artists and i want denise to get a quarter for making the match.

or what happened to chat on myspace and what if you could invite friends to a shared collaborative space. what if myspace powered collaboration in the communities and groups there--what if advertisers sponsored it with new google-powered search and adwords.

myspace isn't all kids. myspace is my space too--and other social spaces will be my space, but you have to understand, i like myspace because i like who is already there.

add a qumana-driven tagging utility--break me free of pre-configured tags on myspace.

what if i could host events ON MYSPACE not just announce events. getting invited to an event on myspace makes me think: oh goody, something to do online and then i find out it's in LA. i can't get to LA today. Now I DO want to know what's up in the ATL. that's good. let me pick--show me events for Online, Atlanta, Southeast. and so on. Hold some stinking online events--or bridge me to a world where I can.

i like myspace because i don't like finished spaces. I like spaces that still need work. I want to know there's still work to do. in a finished space, the world is populated and everything works, and so what. then you die.

in spaces where everyone has to lean forward to make it to the top of the hill, THAT's where community is. Community is what forms where everything isn't fixed and working and fleshed out. Community is possibility.

MySpace Music

...currently enjoying the music of myspace friend, guitarist/bassist Levi Seacer, Jr. Levi's out of prince's band and others:
"Levi Seacer Jr. started playing guitar at the ripe age of six in a small church in Richmond, California at the request of his grandmother who wanted more than the typical organ and piano sound associated with gospel music. Seacer says "I knew the first time I played the guitar that music would be a big part of my life" Little did he know that he would travel around the world to share his musical talents with many of the great artists of our time. One of these artists, in particular, was Prince. He saw the talent in Seacer while Levi was touring with Shelia E., a Prince protege. When the Revolution was disbanded, Prince asked Shelia and Levi to join his new band. Later named The New Power Generation. During Levi's seven year stay, Prince noticed many other talents in Seacer and quickly utilized them. Levi's first post as Band Leader and Musical Director led him to become Staff Producer for Paisley Park Records and finally President of NPG Records. During his term as President, Seacer and the NPG staff marketed, manufactured, and distributed "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" which has become one of Prince's biggest selling records to date. Also, 1-800-New-Funk, an album featuring various NPG artists had great international success. Independently, Levi has also worked as a producer, songwriter, session musician and music supervisor for such great artists as, The Sounds of Blackness, The Time, Shelia E., Johnny Lang, Tevin Campbell, George Clinton, Barry White, Carmen Electra, The Pointer Sisters, Gerald Alston, Monie, Mavis Staples, Nona Gaye, Elisa Fiorillo, Ingrid Chavez, Martika and many others. Levi is currently starting up his own Entertainment Media Company "Diamond Bridge" With his partner and wife Jonna Jackson Seacer. The first artist Christopher Lawrence is a very talented songwriter and musician out of Minnesota, check him out on myspace/christopherlawrenceband. Levi has received two grammy nominations for his contributions to Prince and the three time grammy award winning Sounds of Blackness. Levi was also voted as one of the 1000 greatest guitarists in the world."

i can't tell you how bad i want to smoke 2 yrs latr

i just can't tell you how badly i want to smoke. i want to smoke ooooooo mmmmmm so badly. i want to smoke like i never smoked. i want to light up and draw one, slow, long drag up into my eye lids, back into my temples. i want to feel warm in my heart, i want to pull it deep inside, i want to sigh the biggest sigh i ever sighed, the head rush of the century, i want to tip tip tip the stem and watch the ashes fall, embers, lit tip steaming, swirling. Night air. Crisp thinking. I want to SMOKE SMOKE SMOKE. i want the weather to cool down, pre-cold september days, welcoming the sunshine, lean back in the lawn chair or float in the pool alone so as not to offend a soul and smoke smoke smoke. i want a book and a cigarette. i want my health and my smokes. i want escape and to not let my kid down. i want my clarity back and i want my lungs too. you mean to tell me we can't figure out how to make that happen yet? Science--Pshaw!!

General Anesthesia Pre-Boarding

I'm thinking that the safest and most bearable way to fly without electronics or liquids of any kind is to put passengers under general anesthesia prior to boarding, wheel them on, and bring them to consciousness at landing. No more seats--we fly on gurneys. Surgeon-like Sky Marshals can remain wake in case the pilots get out of hand. The night before travel, no food or water after midnight. Everyone's safe, boredom is no problem.

Or they could do it Phil's way and let us walk on.

carnivorous carnival - fogo de chao anniversary dinner

So tonight we ate at Fogo de Chao in Buckhead for our anniversary dinner. Never. In. My. Life. Have. I. Seen. So. Much. MEAT! Oh man, what a mouthwatering-delicacy kind of place. What an award winning all-the-meat-you-can-eat kind of place. Awesome salad bar too, complete with those soft balls of mozzarella that you just HAVE TO HAVE when you see them because they're too expensive to buy at the store, plus fresh asparagus, artichokes, roasted peppers, marinated mushrooms, black beans, rice--GET OUT OF HERE THIS IS TOO GOOD!

Then, after you finish loving the salad bar, the gauchos walk around with all kinds of meat on skewers and come up to your table and slice you some (i.e., as much as you want). Top sirloin, bottom sirloin, fillet, beef ribs, pork ribs, lamb, chicken, holy carnivorous carnival batman.

Great service, great food, great place.

Thank you, George, for a wonderful evening. Let's go back so you can slam down some more lamb. (Shhh don't tell jenna we had fun without her!)

On Our 20th Wedding Anniversary

On August 9th, 1986 I said, "I do." I didn't have a clue what those words would mean going forward--"I do" is something you say retroactively because you have loved someone hard enough and long enough to say it.

My "I do" seems like 5 minutes ago and 150 years ago all at once. I am married to a man I have known for 22 years--exactly half of my lifetime, all of my adult life.

I love you, George. I loved you when I was a kid and I love you now. Holy cow. 20 years. Holy cow. It's fun to look in your eyes and see them smiling, see our eyes saying back and forth to each other:  Wow, what? Tee hee. Man.

People tell you when you're 24 and getting married that it won't be easy, that love doesn't solve problems, that you can't live on love. They aren't lying when they say these things. But they also aren't saying to you that love is so many things in one instant:

Love isn't easy and it's breathlessly simple. it doesn't solve problems and it erases everything but itself. you can't live on love and love is living.

Love feels like 5 minutes and 500 years. It's childlike and ancient. It is slicing pain and a way to wholeness. It's layer upon layer upon layer of knowing. Knowing feels like death and is the context for living.

How can something be so everything at once?

I love you, George. Happy 20. ;-)

What?

Sometimes when I have way too much to do and I get all spaced out and confused, I hurt myself. Not purposely--I just become accident prone. As is such with my broken toe that is STILL mangled and killing me. And as is such today with my ear, because of a story I will share with you.

After the shower I clean out my ears gently with Q-Tips, just to get the water out, and because my hair is longish I wrap it in a towel, right, you with me? So there I am with the Towel Wrapped Hair and the Q-Tip in my left ear when all of a sudden the Towel Wrap unfurls itself and falls off to the left, knocking my arm that's holding the Q-Tip INTO my ear and jabbing the Q-Tip into my ear drum with such a force and shock of pain that my knees buckled. HELP ME MOTHER OF MERCY! OWWWWWWCH!!

I mean that Q-Tip was down my ear canal before the pain receptors in my lame brain understood the severity of the situation and yanked it out, leaving me helplessly wounded. I was blinded from the towel flopping into my face, half bent over from the nausea, and deaf from the stabbing pain across the left side of my head. I couldn't even tell George what happened for a minute or two because anything beyond a whisper reinvigorated the stabbing pain in my ear.

Tonight, the pain has settled down to a throb.

The moral of the story: Don't Wash.

The most thought provoking post of the year...

Stowe on Context:

But today context holds its sway, and I am looking down, below the basket on the blimp, and I see the boiling ocean of despair, hate, and war, below; down where I do not want to go, where I do not want to look. And I wonder, does context hold us up, or will context pull us down? Can we skate free above this bubbling turmoil, can we show a way free of hate and conflict: or am I simply delusional in the face of entrenched and unassailable hatred and rancor? Is the Web an escapist enclave or the hope for humanity.

Punking Qumana

You know I use Qumana. You know I like Qumana. You know the folks at Qumana have been good to me. I tell them all kinds of things about how I use Qumana, and they listen to what I have to say. They don't take all my blabbering to heart. But I tell them what I think could be better, and when I have a point, they say, Oh Okay, and then it happens.

And it's  not just me. They're relentless in following conversations from other Q users on how they write and publish online. I love the changes in 3.0 -- like how now we can play with fonts and font sizes, how BubbleShare works with Qumana, and have I said that Q has the best as-you-type spell checker in the biz?

By now everyone(?) knows that Qumana can post to all of your blogs, across various blogging platforms -- like Blogger and Wordpress and TypePad -- from a single, Qumana window. No more jumping from platform to platform to blog THEIR way--you do it YOUR way in Qumana -- Q does the work of posting it to the right blog in the proper blogging tool.

Like anything I use a lot, I find other things to do with the tool beyond the straight 'user experience' -- and yeah, i punk Qumana from time to time.

Fantastic HTML Editor for Gated Social Spaces - MySpace, BlogHer (drupal), and More

You may or may not know this, but if you send email or bulletins in MySpace, or if you blog there, you have to enter your writing using HTML. Ever notice those MySpace profiles that are ONE BIG PARAGRAPH and look like Hemingway puked vodka on the screen? Yep--those are the folks that don't know a paragraph tag could save us all a lot of trouble. Same folks that haven't learned the 'a href' secret of making a hypertext link. And I'm with them. WHY in 2006 should we have to enter our words into someone eles's service using HTML? Hey, give us a break. Typing in straight HTML is a drag. It zaps the flow.

I enter copy on my MySpace page using Qumana's "Source View." Let's say I'm writing an email in MySpace. I write my stuff in the WYSIWYG window of Qumana, format it there, and when I get it how I want, I click the source view tab and copy and paste it into the MySpace email. The formatting is perfect every time. I do the same thing with my BlogHer posts. For whatever reason, we have to enter HTML manually in our posts--I use Qumana to do it, same way I do for MySpace. Now, Qumana is compatible with Drupal, but something about the team blogging aspect of BlogHer has me confused on getting it post automatically to my BlogHer blog. It's nearly as easy to write and format in Qumana and copy the Source View into drupal anyway.

Tagging's SO EASY

I never tagged before I started using Qumana. I still don't quite understand it beyond technorati, never took time to learn about delicious--don't even know where the dots go in delicious--BUT when I first started using Qumana I noticed this TAG button. I pushed it. It said, enter tags separated by commas, so I started doing what they said. Bam --sticks tags RIGHT IN THERE, and you can enter multi-word tags, which I couldn't figure out how to do before. Something about a plus sign.

Then I got thinking, why should MySpace blogging lock users into a specific set of 15 or so tags? (That's what "categories" are in MySpace: they're tags on technorati.) SO maybe you want to tag something with "Dog Collar" over in MySpace, and you can't do that with the pre-fab tags/categories they give you -- tags like "romance and relationships" aaaah! To get around the pre-fab tags, all you do is open Qumana, click TAGS, enter your tags, click the Source View tab, and copy and paste the HTML for your tags into your MySpace blog.

NOW you have the best of both worlds--the gated community tags of MySpace AND your freeform personal tags from Qumana. Niceeee.

Ads with Posts Wherever You Go

Ads in MySpace? You can't do that! Yah well, it's my blog, and I don't know all the ins and outs, but I can put keyword ads in MySpace using Qumana in about 1.5 seconds. Just type your post in Qumana, insert a Q-Ad by clicking the Insert Ad button, the insert your tags, and finally copy the text in Qumana's Source View into your MySpace blog. Bingo--Your post is formatted, tagged, and even has an ad, all using one copy-and-paste from Qumana. NICE options to have.

So that's some of what I wanted to tell folks who have asked, what do you do with Qumana? I do some of what I'm supposed to do, and some of what I'm not.  ;-)

I am a Woman Blogger

No, that title isn't a 12-step meeting introduction, nor is it link baiting in my case.

It's an important part of who I am.

I am one answer to the question: Where are the women bloggers?

I am the answer, "RIGHT HERE!" And right here, and right here, and right here.

Every woman blogger is an answer. Not every woman blogger has to give a shit about the question. But if a women blogger or a few hundred or thousand women bloggers DO care about the question, AND answering it, then good for them. And if they decide to have a conference, and charge $99 to get in, and put trojans and sweetener in bags and hand them out, good for them.

Even better for them that they do what Lisa has done, and listen to women and men who attended the conference and who were pissed off about the bags of condoms and the mommy bloggers in need of bibs, pissed at having to listen to the sponsors who made the price of $99 registration feasible, pissed about the food, location, connectivity, and more. Good on Lisa for hearing both the anger and the joy of the women and men who came from near and far, good for talking about it in public, good for deciding some things need to change, good for standing your ground on things that don't need to change.

Good for not apologizing for your voice.

When it comes down to it, folks who have been around these parts for half a decade or so will tell you this: what we do here is secondary to who we're doing it with. I trust Lisa, her judgment, admire her passion, and I congratulate her for what she and Jory and Elisa have done, and what they're about to do.

I don't know if I'll participate in the BlogHer Ad Network or not. But I sure am ALL FOR giving BlogHers new tools and opportunities for getting paid to write.

The economic implications of writing online -- of taking the "USE ME" out of user-generated content -- are officially undeniable.

Not everyone gets a book deal. Not everyone has ins at publications who still pay for contributed articles. Not everyone wants to be wed to their 9-5 job. Not all women with kids want to commute to an office every day. If one little piece of one little ad network on one little blog gives a boost to freeing women -- vocally and economically -- then I don't know what the hell there is to gripe about.

You go, Lisa. You go you star spangled girl.

jenna i want my archives to tell you how much i love you. i don't know if archives will be there in 20, 30, 1 year or whatever/however, but i live in social networks now -- that's like having friends in real life, like we do, except online --  one of which is the blogosphere, and if my archives go away those people can tell you that even when i suck at it and even when I lose my cool, seem sad, or say no WAY are you getting the aqua marine DVD and you throw a fit in the car like your two but you're eight---EVEN THOUGH AND BECAUSE OF ALL THAT AND WITH AND WITHOUT A HUNDRED OTHER DAYS JUST LIKE THIS I LOVE YOU SO SO MUCH.

If i could give you my squishy gross heart still all beating and pumpig to stick in your pocket i would, but that is kind if sick and twisted to even say, nonetheless, i know you'll get my drift. Dad and I look at you and sometimes when you're in your room or walking down the road or playing with the dog or reading, we stop and wonder how you came out of us and grew into such an amazing human, not to mention in like three weeks time, or that's how long it seems, even though we went shoe shopping today and you're a size 4, a 5 in Sketchers. You were a bean on the ultrasound. I don't get it. You were just a minute old and now look at you with your beauty and your art business, lilaslilies.com, don't worry, we'll get something up there one day soon, don't be mad at me if it doesn't happen right away, but do you know what I mean? You are brilliant and cool and so funny you scare us. Alan Murphy was right when he said you are a comedian and your daddy said people will come from all over to see you. Just don't be afraid.

I know you are afraid to go into third grade--that's why you've been so up and down. Thank you for telling us when we said: Jenna, what's really going on? What's this all about--really? And you told us you were afraid. Afraid to get a mean teacher, and we said--remember this--you aren't going to school alone. We're here to make sure it's good and straight up, and have you had a bad teacher yet? Okay i want you to be happy and excited--don't be afraid.

I have to sleep now because in the morning you're going to stumble into my room and the first words you'll say are: What are we going to do today?

I hope everything.

I love you.

all things gaaah

everything has to be done and i'm behind. i apologize to my lovely clients with whom I am nearly keeping up and adding value if you don't count the fuzzy brained responses to those tough conference call questions, like:

"Are you there?"

GAAAH!

Even Nigerian spammers are starting to get pissed off because I have fallen down on my responsibility to not delay. I can't STAND letting them down.

take my wife, please.

i am having brain activity that i think is either close to a stroke or coma--right now words going through my head are assembled thusly: rackety taket too do you do dooo flow through and blue is the news take a cruise and don't lose, rah rah rah whoopie da da da.

Right--slap that in a post and click. See how 'pro' you look then genius girl.

what you get for free...

...is me this late at night on the dock, waves of sleep licking the poles, the cadence to rely on. and still i wind down in that hurt head place mixed mashed confusion in the frontal lobe, globe space and time, what planet am I even on? where you keep up and i keep time still standing from the car that wiped you off the pavement, must have been doing 50, your shoes blow off on impact: at that moment, you are sparks. straight from childhood to grown up, don't look down, real job, real life, real car, real world, except for the waking. Waking into clutching, clutching is holding on before the first morning breath, terror speaks loudest, no screams: not again. Fear meet rage, good to meet you before i destroy you, lets lock eyes, see if you can find the me i lost, the you, losing best what i want least to lose.

it's not rocket science you know.

it goes back to the pines, always back to the expanse of field dotted with thick pines and sap so fresh, the place of surprise - late afternoon i fear most the black sky about to open up, take me, I'm so far from the back porch, what does safe mean, barely see the barn from here, crackle of lightning, how dark can the day become, and the inchworm falls from the farthest branch down his silken string, my mouth agape, watching, lands on my tongue, real not dream, i spit and spit and run between bolts of so-white electric: which is worse, the worm or the storm? neither one, i find out; it's losing your daddy.

Eat worms, crash through static cascading flashes, but nothing compares, not really, to what gone means.

tony tony tony has done it again

tony reminds me how to blog every time.

"i have the lowest self esteem of anyone you know. and i have the dumbest reason for it than everyone you know. if theres an archeologist in the house, throw ten thousand years of dirt on this blog and then dig it up and you will see that all of this was a way for me to play chess with the demons in my head and the spectacular battle almost always ends up exactly the same way as when jacob wrestled the angel - in a sore draw where both parties limp home with new names."

ironic

i just got spam with the subject line "uterus agenda."  i strongly believe my uterus has an agenda. I believe it's secret, closely guarded and modeled after christine dolce's agenda to take over myspace--oh wait, she already has.

my uterus could give hers some tips, although i'm sure her uterus is way more gorgeous. maybe her uterus could teach mine some new tricks. my uterus likes to take charge. my uterus is a good business woman and a mean stepmother all at the same time. my uterus held my kid but doesn't care much about her now. in fact, i think my uterus is narcissistic. my uterus has an agenda alright.

uterus agenda. i guess that's what i should be tagging with these days.

Fish Ebola Not Yum

I'm sad to hear that my piscine friends in Lake Ontario are dying of what sounds like a fishy version of Ebola. The virus, viral hemorrhagic septicemia, has been described as a fish version of the plague, with a hit-or-miss attack on its victims.

Although not all fish are hurt by the virus, the picture of those that are is not pretty. It destroys the lining of blood vessels, causing internal bleeding; infected fish often have bulging eyes with bleeding around the sockets, pale gills, distended, fluid-filled bellies and corkscrew swimming behaviour.

Apparently it's okay to play with sick fish, but scientists recommend against ingesting them.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada says it is safe to handle infected fish, even if they are dying or dead, but it doesn't recommend eating them.

I don't know--they sound kind of appetizing what with the bulging eyes and fluid filled bellies.

Global Boiling

Talked to my good friend Michael OCC (I'm down with OCC, yeah you know me) yesterday and found out it was 334 degrees in Toronto. Holy Crap that's Hot!

The heat index in the ATL today is somewhere near 520 I think, and I heard the Breadbasket of America is baking croissants in the street.

Gore in 24! Gore in 24!

I asked MOCC if Lake Ontario was boiling. He said yes. I thought so. Put the shrimps on the bar-bee because the walleye bass will be done soon!

Feed of the Day

Wow, we're feedster's Feed of the Day over here. Guess that means I should say something interesting. You know, probably because my uterus, Dave Winer, and BlogHer coverage isn't the most fascinating bloggage I've ever contributed to the sphereoblogs.

No wait, why don't YOU ALL say something interesting. Maybe people will adopt your feed and hug it and love it and take it home to their aggregators where it will remain nurtured and cared for all the days of its nat'ral life.

The Either Ors and the Both Ands

There are far to many words on the Internet. You realize this when you shoot to hell your computer keyboard and your space bar starts to suck and all your words run together, meaning you have to exert yourself by backspacing and retyping and whatnot.

So rather than add to that overabundance of online words, I’m going to borrow the already-published words of others to  fight the growing mass of bullfunk spewing from the mouths of johnnie and janie marketing and internet punditry.

Bullfunk I say. That's what I said.

When you grow up and recover from all of the damage you walked through to get old, you realize that richness and passion nearly always resolve to things that make you throw up.

In other words, everything goes back to puke.

But then, as I mentioned, my spacebar is having issues. And so:

I didn't say either of those things. But then, I was being a bit hyperbolic in that piece. Cluetrain was hyperbolic too. The difference was, Cluetrain was for everybody. People of Earth, it began. When Chris Locke wrote we are not seats or eyeballs or end users or consumers. We are human beings and our reach exceeds your grasp. deal with it... the we was everybody. -- --http://doc.weblogs.com/2006/08/02#hurrycaneSeason

 AND

The connections between and among our World of Ends add AND value to every node with every community that forms, every blogroll link added.

It's Reed's Law in action. When you link to this post in your own blog, the fact of the act ANDs me - enhancing and reinforcing my ties into the World of Ends, adding value to us both and all.

Our shared World of Ands can become so strong that together we can even face, perhaps even prevent, the End of the World.

Yeah, so I'm a hippy. So AND me.

AND

And this little imaginary war with the other bloggers was going well, in my mind, anyway, until I discovered that suddenly all of them had surpassed me in the Technorati rankings, and it was then that I realized that WAR IS STUPID ANYWAY. Violence is never the answer, and people who think so should be beaten. And when C-list bloggers go to war, the only winner is Haliburton.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t pick an adversary, but for God’s sake, don’t pick someone who actually cares about this sort of thing, and for God’s sake, don’t actually TELL them you’re at war, just do it in your head, and for God’s sake, don’t fight with a boy, because boys are stronger, and even though I was once beaten up by a girl, that doesn't detract from the truth of this statement, it only makes it harder to digest. EVENTUALLY, WE ALL COME TO REALIZE THAT TRUTH IS HARD TO DIGEST.

RECAP:
War is fine so long as:
1. You only fight with the weak.
2. Once the weak become stronger than you, you reconcile and have sex.
3. You don’t ever tell the person that you’re fighting that you’re at war.
4. You don’t hit girls, and if they start to hit back, run, because they’re surprisingly accurate and strong.
5. You go to church afterwards, or at the very least DRIVE by a church, even if it’s a church that sells firearms.

He's Not Our Friend

I take blogging personally. I take the projects related to blogging that I'm involved in personally. That's because online is half my world or better. I am here at least half time. I make half my income here. And I don't apologize for it. I made more than half my income through online clients during the ecommerce boom. I don't remember apologizing for that either. I am a grown up. I can handle my personal and marketing related activities accordingly. When they intersect with this space, I'll handle them however I please. If you disagree, you'll go away. And if my clients disagree, they'll go away. In the mean time, aren't we having fun!?!?!

Glad we've cleared that up. Now, for Dave Winer.

As I said, Dave's comments on BlogHer that several folks have linked to made me want to toss my cookies or drive over a cliff like two chicks in a Buick or whatever kind of car it was in that movie he referenced. Why? Because he set us up. I knew he was setting us up when he started talking about BlogHer favorably MONTHS before the conference; I knew he was setting us up when he started linking to Elisa so frequently (Dave's ulterior motives reside consistently in his hyperlinks); and I knew he was setting us up when he declared he was going to miss the conferences that were important to his business and wallet to attend BlogHer. I said it out loud to more than one person: He's setting you up.

Divide and conquer. It's a really old trick.

Amyloo says Dave is not our enemy. I say Dave is not our friend.

Dave decides to point to Shelley now that she's criticizing a women-run conference. I predicted it as soon as I read her post.

It creeps me out, Dave's comments about babes-n-sexy-n-guy-to-girl-ratios, and his using a photo from BlogHer as his  banner on Scripting News. My reaction: like seeing Jesse Jackson's face on an old Ford pickup truck driving through South Georgia: Somebody's up to no good.

You can call me crazy, or you can call me after you've spent five years here and have had a number of Dave encounters. But that sweet-sexy-babe-techy-women-nerding-out still makes me want to puke.

health and wellnesssss

So, jenna and george are playing Sequence downstairs just now, and I hear her ask him about acupuncture, which all of these years she tells him she has thought was pronounced acu"puncher" (or PunchHer in honor of BlogHer). She knew just enough to think it had something to do with punching needles in to your skin. Which, well, it sometimes feels like. But I get the idea she was imagining a hole puncher. Again...

George explained,"No, you see, what I get is called acupunCTure."

And she says, "Oh, you mean you get punked?"

blahahahaha!

In other health related news I am in a good holding pattern right now. I want to thank every one of you who have written in support, have shared your uterine loss celebrations, and have pledge helped when the surgery takes place especially if george is away. Weee! I appreciate it. When I get those overwhelming waves of, "but what am I gonna do about...." I go, "It'll be okay." At least this week.

I go back in three weeks for another ultrasound, and am busily focused on getting Jenna back to school on 8/14. Things in the uterine area have settled down--something that actually happened during the BlogHer chat. I'll spare you the gory details. Whoever has been praying or puncturing voodoo dolls in my honor, it's either working or not working respectively. Again, Thank You.

More later, I gotta go get punked.

BlogHer 06 Live Chat Recap

Those of us on the chat during BlogHer on Saturday had what I would say was a good time--mostly thanks to Denise who live chatted the sessions she attended. How amazing was she, navigating the conversation and relaying it to us.

She was our mole. Our liaison. Our tour guide into the real-time dimension of the event. Her live chatting skills should be patented. And, the rundown of the conference happenings on her blog -- the goods and bads -- are definitely worth a read. I for one want to say again: THANK YOU DENISE!

Next year I would suggest either we divide Denise into four people, necessitating the grafting of several more arms and hands (which I bet would be painful), or we have a designated chatter in each session. Each session could have its own chat window, which would let remote folks have the option of following more than one session at a time. How cool would that be? Also, if there were a way to keep track of some remote-chat questions (incoming) for end-of-session Q&As when appropriate, that would be great too.

In trying to follow the Live Bloggers for the event, I noticed several who either got too tied up in the activities or had too many connectivity challenges to actually live blog the sessions they were slotted to blog. Perhaps, since chats like Gabbly Chat have RSS feeds now, as much can be translated through live chats as through live blogging?

I didn't get all the chat transcripts (I think some morning chats are missing), but what I could copy and paste from the feed without taxing my aging laptop to death, I put into a BlogHer 06 Chat blog. Have at it.

You'll notice a substantive difference between the times Denise was with us giving us the rundown, and the times when chatters were left in the cyber-halls to talk amongst themselves. ;-)

Parts of this post made me want to drive my car over a cliff too.

For substance and clarity, read Liz Henry, who nails it.

I disagree with only one thing Liz says: "It is not like Dave is an especially awful example of sexism..."

Uh, yes it is.

Nick Mike Mike Nick

Lots of hubub over ValleyWag's Nick Douglas doing a potential story on Attorney-cum-tech-reporter Mike Arrington and his investments in technology companies. According to Mike, Nick (whom Mike emailed accidentally just last week) is now emailing FOMs (friends of Mike) to see if Mike has made investments in their companies. One FOM emailed Mike Nick's email about Mike. That FOM inferred that Nick was writing a hit piece on Mike.

Mike discloses his investments on his blog. Nick knows this. Nick explains that he didn't mass email anyone--he was instead looking into a deleted comment on TechCrunch about one company. I figured maybe he was going to write something FUNNY.  I rely on Nick to be funny. I rely on Mike to write about web 2.0. Let's let it happen.

I am in the chat memorial for Mandarin Meg currently

Instructions for joining the Memorial chat for Meg Goodrich that is taking place at BlogHer:

open up your chat client

type /attach freenode

(the front slash is important I think)

when you have some indication that you are attached to freenode, type:

/join #mandarinmeg

We are sitting in silence. If something moves you to speak, feel free to share it in the chat. From Frank:

This gathering will be loosely modeled on Quaker practice: coming together in silence, followed by some brief comments by me regarding our purpose there, then continuing quiet while people speak when they feel moved to share. We will ask that each person speak only once until all present have had a chance to share. After an hour of silence broken by our thoughts and memories, I will break the silence by standing and thanking those in attendance.

This memorial chat goes from 3:45 pacific time for what I think is about an hour.

Stop over to BlogHer today and tomorrow to follow all the action.

Will Frank Paynter hug Jory Des Jardins like I asked him to do last time?
Will Dave Winer show up, shut up, and learn something?
Will the power of hundreds of women in one location push back the Pacific tide or elicit mass menses?
Will the world ever be the same? (I say no.)

We'll be having a chat tomorrow--stay tuned for more information.

Blog Sisters + BlogHer in the Pittsburgh Tribune

A very nicely done article in the Pittsburgh Tribune on women and blogging that quotes yours truly, as well as the BlogHers who were kind enough to give a nod to their Blog Sisters. The article discusses how blogs have helped women find and exercise their voices.

You may wonder if some media training isn't in order for Mrs. Sessum, as she reveals before God and clients the imminent loss of her uterus and her penchant for X*anax. It's not every day you get THIS kind of publicity!

"If life were supposed to be orderly, then my house wouldn't look like it does and my kid wouldn't have open paints and blendy pens all over her floor, and I wouldn't have to take a half of a zzzzanax as I mull over the many possibilities in the weeks and months ahead."

There will also be live blogging that will keep us remote attendees in the fray.

It's one of those things

my life right now is very limboesque. health issues do that. at least to me. put me into a not well but not unconscious 'just here' place that I absolutely abhor. But that' how it is. So, here I'm saying to you, just like I did when I quit smoking, that I want to make meaning out of this, that I have 3 weeks until I see the doc again, and in that time I am going to focus like a laser beam on getting healthier. I can do this.

And even though I'm rollercoaster-phobic about hospitals, if that's what comes next, I can do that too. (Remember, I'm saying this here so you'll remind me, like you did when I quit the cigs, which you helped me do, whether you know it or not, even though I've told you so.) So let's get jiggy with it. And let's get ready for virtual BlogHer, including a friends memorial for Meg thanks to Frank's good heart.

For those who want to participate, the memorial will be at BlogHer on July 28, from 3:45 to 4:45 in suite 8111 at the Hyatt. A Freenode IRC chat space will be set-up for remote participants. There is a possibility of streaming audio--either way, I'll be there.

So let's, you know, let's be and be together and be okay and be healthy. And be there.

More thought on now and later and BlogHer and Qads

If you're a woman who has bled through her clothes on a mode of public transportation no matter how well you prepared, if you've ever been anemic and huff-and-puff tired, if you've felt so low low down about your uncooperative womb and how it rules your life when it decides to, then you'll know why it's looking less likely that I'll be hopping a Jet to CA on Thursday.

The doc wants another ultrasound in 3 weeks. Then we decide what to do. OR, more succinctly, when to do what has to be done. Gotta get Jenna back to school on the 14th. Gotta get George to Korea potentially soon. Gotta keep going. Put off menopause. Dig old Xanax out of the purse. Get moving. Get healthier before surgery. Keep working.

The cute ad below is from Qumana's Qads. Oh my gosh--it is unbelievably easy to add an ad to a blogpost with Qumana. All this time I was hesitant to push the "insert ad" button because I didn't know what I would be doing to my fine sponsors. I thought I might trigger an event that would, well, embarrass them, spewing penis spam throughout the blogosphere. But it doesn't work that way. You just click it and put in a keyword and Bob's your Uncle. It's almost like tag-ads. Like you put in a tag, and up comes an ad. I thought that's how Google ads were supposed to work, but they NEVER worked for me. Blogads are more involved--they are like horizontal ads, umbrella ads, while Qads lets you drill down to keywords and hook right up to waiting advertisers.

The moral of the story: Do not hesitate to click in life. Invest in overnight pads. And take your iron.

July 23, 2006

When it rains it rains

And that means good things as well as the other kind.

I've been deep in thought lately--and deep into work--both of which hamper the old blogging ritual. Lots to think about and lots to do. The Friday doctor's appointment was interesting. I think he's my favorite surgeon I never met.

I went to the office for my appointment to realize that I was at the WRONG office, and couldn't find the doc's number through information, so i finally called another doc who had his number, which I then dialed and reached the office staff, who were gracious enough to say come on up (20 miles) even though I was now an hour late, and so I drove it on my donut tire (because the tire place was fixing the flat) and got there only to realize that I would never make Jenna's final camp party, which I promised to attend, if I didn't leave right away. So I went up to the window and just put my head in my hands and said, "you have to help me with this." The most efficient receptionist I've ever met listened while I explained getting lost, and the donut spare, and my daughter's picnic, and my pain, and my other appointment on Monday and everything.

He said, "Hey, it's okay. You should go be with your child--you promised." And I wanted to hug him as he re-scheduled me and sent me on with a smile and a new appointment card, after which I drove back down to Jenna's camp for the cookout and party that lasted two hours in 140-degree heat, but mostly was inside, praise the lord, and with one slipper on my left TOE foot, and one shoe on my right, I participated in the three-legged race, the hoola-hoop-pass-through, and the egg-and-spoon relay, because when you're a mom that is precisely the kind of day Friday can be.

So let's just get honest here and say that I will be having a hysterectomy sooner or later--the timeframe of which will be discussed on Monday, and THAT alone is interesting as I say this in front of friends and clients alike--thank god most of my clients are also friends--but I figure outside of the first week of pain-medicine-sleep, I should be able to work on my laptop and little else. Hormonal changes notwithstanding, I'm figuring post-hyst to be a productive time for work. And apparently just hanging around in bed is the matter of course after a TAH for a couple/few weeks/months.

And that's all well and good, and I'm excited for George that his new working band (and i mean working as in, not so much an artistic endeavor but a band designed to satisfy well-paying overseas venues) may have just landed a gig in Korea for three months, except that gee that is an interesting development given these current state of home front affairs, and my bowels shudder and loosen at the thought of solo parenthood coinciding with surgery and recovery. But then who knows? Mysterious ways. Goodness knows.

If life were supposed to be orderly, then my house wouldn't look like it does and my kid wouldn't have open paints and blendy pens all over her floor, and I wouldn't have to take a half of a zzzzanax as I mull over the many possibilities in the weeks and months ahead.
